The Nordic commercial geothermal heat pump has been a staple of our product offering for the past decade. You can find these units installed in commercial applications across Atlantic Canada, in schools, nursing homes, farmers’ markets and hockey arenas. But just because we’ve produced a great design, doesn’t mean we’re resting on our laurels. We’re always looking to improve our products to make them longer lasting, more efficient, and easier to install and service. That’s why last year we undertook a complete design of the Nordic Commercial W Series. Here’s what our Product Engineer, Dan Rheault, had to say about that:
The redesigned Commercial W Series was no small undertaking. This was not a tweak, this was a complete reconfiguration of the unit. The older version of the Commercial W Series had a rectangular cabint. The unit was typically installed vertically stacked in racks on the job site.
The New Nordic Commercial Geothermal Heat Pump Design
That design has been shelved in favour of the vertical unit featured above. This configuration has several benefits: it’s convenient to install multiple units side-by-side. The unit can be easily maneuvered into place with a forklift from the front or side. Once in place, all service and the removal of the exterior enclosure can be done from the front of the unit, which means the units can be spaced very closely together side-by-side, saving mechanical room space.
While the horizontal-to-vertical reconfiguration of the unit is the most obvious change, we completely revamped the interior of the unit as well. Inside, the tandem compressor configuration of the old unit has been replaced with a duel scroll compressor design. This design keeps two refrigerant circuits completely separate with a common water coil. We took special care to clearly and logically separate the two for ease of service.
Nordic Commercial Geothermal Heat Pump Features
The new Nordic Commercial W Series also comes equipped with our new Gen2 programmable control board with BACnet capability, onboard aquastat functionality, and our new outdoor reset feature. This unit is available in heating only or fully reversible mode, with a maximum output water temperature of 120°F. One thing that did not get redesigned for this unit was the wide range of sizes to suit a variety of applications. This unit is available from 12 to 65 nominal tons.
